The E.T. A.-Hoffmann-Kammerorchester Berlin is the chamber orchestra of the "Musikschule" of Berlin's district Charlottenburg- Wilmersdorf (former West- Berlin) and comprises about 20 non professional musicians. It is financially supported by the district's administration.
The orchestra was founded by Dinah Backhaus and Matthias Wildenhof. It celebrated it's tenth anniversary in 2004.
The ensemble includes well trained amateurs and semi-professional musicians. The orchestra took the name of ETA Hoffmann because he is a perfect symbol illustrating the situation of most of the members of the orchestra: in addition to a „normal“ occupation ETA Hoffmann was artistically active and creative in free time.
ETA.Hoffmann (1776-1822) acts as a godfather in many ways:
Hoffmanns „normal“ profession was being a jurist at the Berlin Court of Chambers but he dedicated himself with enthusiasm in his free time to various artforms as writing, painting and composing. He was not only a famous writer but also an acknowledged musician.
